Question:

Is there an ISP in my area that allows a Port 25 access allowing a secondary POP3 server e-mail to be sent. Netzero no longer allows this ability.

Answer:

A couple details about your question first:

POP3 is used to pick up email, SMTP is used to send email. SMTP is what operates on port 25.

Many networks block port 25 as leaving it open permits spammers to send email directly to the SMTP servers of other ISPs, bypassing the ability of the customer's ISP to control the damage, but they get the complaints because it was their customer - that's the basic reason why this is going on.

The "normal" solution for this is to configure your email clients to pick up email from your own POP3 server, but send through the SMTP server of the ISP you subcribe to (and be subject to their TOS).

You would use your own email address in the from: header so the responses go back to your POP3 server. Unless the recipient is skilled at reading email headers, they won't know that the email was actually sent through an ISP email server.

Having said that, there are some reasons why this is problematic - some companies have rules that require all email about company business to be sent through their email server (so it can be logged and archived for use in potential future litigation, etc...)... It can also be painful if you use more than one dialup provider, and have to switch your email client back and forth based on which ISP you are currently using.

As to your specific question, the only way to find that out is to call the ISP - and even then, the answer may be wrong, or might change from day to day. The port 25 block is usually under the control of their wholesaler (uu.net, Qwest, Level(3), etc...), not the ISP.

Just also be aware that when you call up and ask that question, the immediate suspicion will be that you intend to send bulk email through their service, so they may not be very cooperative unless you explain -why- you need port 25 open.
