| Question: Is there any ISP providers who can provide me a service that filters out "ALL" sexual or obseen websites that are on the internet...Another words, I would like a provider who makes it very difficult for a family member or friend to pull up sites that contain sexually explicit stuff...I have used parental controls but I would rather find an ISP who could block "certain sites" from viewing. Answer: My standard answer on this is - if your objective is to prevent a 7 year old girl from accidentally seeing things you don't want her to see and have to explain, filtering and/or parental controls might be pretty effective. If your objective is to prevent a rebellious 15 year old boy from finding naked pictures of Britney Spears, that's an unrealistic expectation. Part of the reason is that what is/or isn't acceptable is a very personal thing - some people would say a web site discussing homosexuality should be banned/filtered - others would say that kind of information is essential for young people to have access to.... some people might assert that Pat Buchannon should be banned as being "hate speech" because they disagree with his politics. Even if you found a filtering solution that couldn't be circumvented on the PC, a clever boy will find out about "proxy servers" that let someone bypass any of the controls that might be in place. There are entire web sites dedicated to telling kids how to disable / evade filtering. A lot of it comes down to supervising their behavior - the 'big guys" each have different solutions - like emailing you a list of all the sites they visited, or sending you a message at work saying "Billy wants to visit nakedchicks.com - is that okay?"... an important part of the supervision is having a plan of how to handle when they do push the boundaries (it's what kids do, and it's the parent's job to push back :))... | ||||||||||||||||||
