Question:

You explain the rating system for ISP's but where are the ratings for each particular ISP. I would like to review the ratings for my potential ISP choice. I can not seem to find them on your website.

Answer:

Your observation is mostly correct. Relatively few of the ISPs carry ratings any more for a variety of reasons, the main ones being that since that document was written, dialup access has basically become a "commodity" business - most of the "national" providers are all buying their internet access from the same handful of wholesalers. There is much less difference among them than their used to be. Also, several of the sponsoring ISPs don't carry ratings because they didn't like the rating they got, so my remedy when they want to pick a fight with me is to show no rating at all. Generally, people perceive that no rating is worse than one star - which isn't really true. Most ISPs probably are 3 star ISPs.

The ratings appear as 1-5 stars in the listing on the city pages. The only 5 star ISP on a national basis is TOAST.net - they are not the cheapest ISP, but consistently have good reports on quality support. They're in Toldedo, Ohio - I actually dropped in and visited them on a vacation a few years ago - the owners know how to run a business and retain good people, and that matters (but isn't cheap)...
